Becoming a Coach on the Internet

Do you enjoy working one-on-one with people? Are you a helper by nature, always looking to solve people’s problems and help them live better? Are you organized and a good communicator? If this describes you, then you have what it takes to start earning money as an internet coach.

Before you begin, it is important to know that the world of coaching has exploded, with there being coaches for just about every field. You can find marketing coaches, nutrition coaches, parenting coaches, personal coaches. The list goes on and on. To earn income as an internet coach, you need to offer something unique.

Choose a Highly Specialized Niche

It’s important that the coaching niche you choose is something about which you are passionate and knowledgeable. You want to be able to provide your clients with your undivided attention and full knowledge.

However, you will earn more money as an internet coach if you are able to specialize. For example, if you decide that you want to become a parenting coach, consider what type of parenting coach. Some possibilities are coach to parents of troubled teens, to parents of toddlers with special needs, to parents who home school, to parents of large families or to single dads.

Specialization will help you eliminate competition and you can set higher coaching fees.

Publish a Book

This is a step that makes many potential coaches pause. They immediately think that they are not a writer; however, you don’t have to be a writer to publish a book. You can have someone ghost write it and you can most certainly write it yourself.

The best books are written conversationally, meaning that they are written the way you speak. In fact, you could dictate your book and have it transcribed. A virtual assistant could format it and edit it and you would be ready to publish.

A published a book is a product that you can sell to make more money. It also sets you apart and helps you establish credibility as an expert.

Partnering

Consider partnering with other coaches to offer more value. For example, a parenting coach might partner with a personal coach. A diet and nutrition coach might partner with a fitness coach. A personal coach might also partner with a home business coach. Together you and your partner(s) can send clients to each other and also offer coaching packages that provide value to your customers and create more business opportunities for each of you.

Coaching is a business model that offers tremendous freedom. You are able to work from home, and consult with your clients via email, Skype and through web chat. You are also able to provide value and help other people live a better life.

Freelancing Your Skills and Experience

As an employee you are subject to work for someone else, but if you want to go out on your own, how can you do that and survive? Many have gained skills through working for others and then decided that they can do just as good a job if they ran their own business, but it take a lot of courage.

Ways to Get Established

* Have a plan – If you are going to be your own boss, you need a plan of action. Know your target market and how to reach them. This might include starting a website, creating a marketing plan and saving some money to be able to pursue your business venture. Without a definite direction to begin with, you could be setting yourself up for disaster.

* Talk to your boss – If you are going to be starting a business similar to the one you currently work in, give your employer the courtesy of hearing it from you. Assure them that you are not trying to hurt them or steal their clients, but you want to try your hand at a business of your own. Even ask them for advice, and they may be willing to endorse you or recommend a few friends who are looking for someone who performs services that you would be perfect for.

* Have an emergency fund – If you are leaving a job to start a business, there will be a cut in pay until you get going. Creating an emergency fund ensures that you bills can be paid while you pursue your endeavor. Also have money to devote to business start-up costs if applicable.

* Investigate online job sites – Let’s use freelance writing as an example. Sites such as Elance offer work for writers, computer software creators and other creative professions. You may have experience with others, but not working on your own for yourself. You may have to start at a low hourly rate, but that will change as you build reputation and writing credits.

* Network with clients – After you have done work for someone, keep in touch with them. Send them emails about new services you are offering. Staying in touch is good customer service.

* Join niche forums and blogs – Follow what others in your field are doing, but don’t just read the blog, participate in discussions. This is how you can make useful connections with others to find opportunities to grow your business.

* Offer a free sample – For new clients who aren’t too sure about you, offer a discount or free sample of your work for them to scrutinize. If they like what you have done, they may hire you. It is a gamble, but one that is backed by your skills.

Freelancing your skills and experience is not easy. It takes dedication and a good plan to get started.

Becoming a Network Marketer

There are many ways to succeed online as a business owner and many business models from which to choose. One such business model with which many have found tremendous success is called Network Marketing.

Network marketing, also known as Multi-Level Marketing, is a business model that rewards people based upon the number of people they recruit. As a network marketer, you represent a company. You promote and sell their products and earn a commission on your sales. However, you also recruit other sales people to join the company. For each person you recruit, you also earn a commission on the sales they make.

Network marketers sell anything from candles and jewelry to herbal supplements and cleaning products. It is an industry that has a lot of controversy, but is also an industry in which you can make a lot of money.

Decide if You Have What It Takes to Succeed

Since network marketing is selling, if you don’t enjoy sales or talking to people, then it is not the right business for you. However, if you enjoy engaging people and talking about their life and their problems (and how your products can solve their problems), then you have found a calling. Since you will be self-employed, you must also be self-motivated.

Find a Company That Appeals to You

Because you are going to be a sales person, it is vitally important that you like the products you are selling and that you believe in them. You will also want to make sure it is a company that has a good reputation both with customers and with sales people. The reason the industry has a bit of controversy is because a few bad companies get a lot of attention, but there are many good and reputable network marketing companies.

Find a Mentor

A mentor will help you skip all the beginner mistakes everyone else makes, and you will be able to launch your career and your income much faster. A mentor may also have some insider secrets and tips that you can use right away. Finally, a mentor is good to help you get and stay motivated. If you don’t want to find a mentor, consider creating a team of other network marketers to meet and motivate each other on a regular basis.

Network marketing is a great business model for the self-motivated sales professional. You are able to make your own hours, work with a company you love and there is no income ceiling or cap with which you have to deal. Many people love network marketing because the sky is the limit.

Considering Buying a Business

Whether you are thinking of buying a small or larger business, you must do some serious due diligence. Here are a few key factors to look into:

Comparable Prices

Every type of business is evaluated differently. Some businesses are evaluated based on cash flow, others based on multiples of profits, others based on the company’s growth potential, and still others use completely different criteria. The ways you evaluate a website versus a restaurant are completely different. Look at other sales in the industry to see what comparable companies are selling for. Determine how companies in the industry are valued and see if that matches the asking price of the company you are considering.

Tax Returns

Request tax returns from the company. Never pay more than the annual income they reported on their taxes. It is common for business owners to say, “We earned $200,000 in revenue last year, but our returns only show $150,000.” Also ask to see audited financial statements.

Track Traffic and Sales Yourself

If you’re buying an Internet business, ask the website owner to host your own tracking pixel on their site for a week or so to see if the statistics pan out. If a restaurant owner says they average $2,000 a day in revenue, then sit across from the restaurant for a day and count the number of patrons. Multiply this by the average order size to see if it is in the right ballpark. In other words, no matter what kind of business you are considering, check the statistics yourself. The only exception is if the business has audited statements from a reputable accounting firm. And if there is a mistake, you will have the recourse of suing the accounting firm.

Any Undisclosed Problems

Few business owners will honestly tell you of the problems in their business. Before you make a concrete offer, it’s your job to dig out any issues that may be there. First, Google the business name and see what comes up. Then Google the name, plus words such as “lawsuit,” “sued,” “complaint,” “BBB,” “scam,” “review” and so on. Determine what people are saying about the business, whether it has had complaints and if they were substantiated.

Also look at the fundamentals of the company. This is when industry knowledge comes in handy. For example, with an Internet business, a shrewd website owner will be able to evaluate just how likely the traffic is likely to continue in the future, and an experienced laundromat owner will be able to evaluate the likelihood of future repair costs, and so on.

Financing

Finally, discuss financing terms with the seller. Believe it or not, sellers will more often than not be willing to finance part of the sale or even have part of the sale be tied to the future performance of the business. It doesn’t hurt to ask.

These are a few of the most important considerations to look into or ask about when you are considering purchasing a company. Unless you are truly looking at a once in a lifetime opportunity, it pays to take your time and do your due diligence carefully.

Avoiding Small Business Start-Up Problems

Setting up a home-based business is not risk free, even if you are not shipping merchandise anything or directly hiring anyone. When you operate a business, you are responsible for the things you do and say and if you don’t protect yourself, you can lose everything. Here are five tips to help you start your small business and avoid legal trouble.

Being Self-Employed

If you are self-employed, set up an LLC instead of a sole proprietorship. An LLC is a Limited Liability Corporation. It essentially means that you create a corporation and are then an employee or member of that corporation. This is an important distinction.

A person can go after your business, but all of your personal assets such as your bank accounts and your home are protected. If you own and operate a sole proprietorship and something goes wrong, the person can go after everything you own.

Depending on the type of business and size of business you are opening, you may want to register it as an S Corporation or other entity. Talk to a lawyer to find the best answer.

Disclaimers

Regardless of the business you are going into, you will likely need a few disclaimers. For example, if you publish a website about how to make money online, you will want a disclaimer to let visitors know that you are not responsible for their online success or failures. The same is true if you provide a service or sell products. Talk to an attorney to have a disclaimer created for your small business.

Privacy and Security Policy

What is your privacy policy? How do you protect your customer’s information? How do you keep their email address, payment information and other information private and protected? Again, you can find basic privacy and security policies online. However, make sure that you follow up and actually take those steps that you outline in your policies.

Business Agreements

If you offer a service, you will likely want to create business agreements to solidify any arrangement you have with your customers. The same is true if you hire contractors. You will want to create a work for hire agreement that outlines the responsibilities and commitments for both parties. You can find basic work for hire agreements online or you can ask your attorney to draw one up.

Insurance

If you sell products or have customers visit you on site, you are going to want to have insurance that protects them and you. The last thing you want is to lose your entire inventory to a fire or to have someone get hurt on your property.

Take a look at your business model and goals. Talk to an attorney. Then take action to protect your business, your assets and your future. It’s not difficult and the protection is well worth the time and energy.
